as you might have read on the main lifestyle journalistic headlines, a few weeks ago, the beautiful Julia Roberts celebrated her 50th birthday, with her magical smile immortalised on dozens of international front pages.

Among the many reasons that led me to appreciate this Hollywood icon, there is something about her that only real horse lovers know: her great passion for equitation. In fact, during her childhood, Julia Roberts took part in several barrel racings, a special kind of American equestrian competition. She has profound love for horses, as stated in many interviews, and claims to have always dreamed about becoming a veterinarian. This was obviously before the planetary success of Pretty Woman, the movie that transformed her into one of the symbols of modern cinema!

Her great passion for riding, among other things, was the driving force behind the documentary Julia Roberts shot in autumn 1999: “Wild Horses of Mongolia with Julia Roberts” which tells the story of her personal journey into the discovery of nomadic populations of Mongolia, to document their intense relationship with these powerful wild animals.

Fra le tante ragioni che mi portano ad apprezzare questa icona di Hollywood tutta al femminile c’è un dettaglio che solo i veri horse lovers conoscono: la sua grande passione per l’equitazione. Durante la sua infanzia, infatti, Julia ebbe la possibilità di praticare un tipo di competizione equestre americana chiamata barrel racing. In ogni intervista, Julia non ha mai fatto segreto del proprio amore per i cavalli, dichiarando anche di aver a lungo sognato di diventare veterinaria… questo ovviamente prima che il successo di Pretty Woman la trasformasse in uno dei massimi simboli del cinema moderno!

La grande passione per l’equitazione, tra l’altro, è stata proprio il motore trainante di un documentario girato da lei stessa nell’autunno del 1999: “Wild Horses of Mongolia with Julia Roberts” racconta la storia del suo viaggio personale alla scoperta delle popolazioni nomadi in Mongolia, per documentarne il rapporto intenso con questi possenti animali selvaggi.

Julia Roberts' entire filmography features plenty of cuts of her riding a horse or scenes set in the “equestrian” world.

You might as well remember her as Maggie Carpenter, while running from the altar in a wedding dress riding a horse in “Runaway Bride”. Not to mention the surreal conversation between an embarrassed Hugh Grant in the role of Will and the lovely Julia, playing the role of Hollywood star Anna Scott. In case you are wondering, I am referring to the award-winning movie “Notting Hill” and the scene where Hugh Grant pretends to be a reporter for “Horse & Hound” just to approach his dream actress and talk to her. In realtà, però, tutta la carriera cinematografica di Julia è costellata da scene in cui lei si ritrova in sella o comunque a contatto con il mondo equestre.

Ve la ricordate per esempio nei panni di Maggie Carpenter, mentre fugge dalla chiesa in abito bianco saltando in sella ad un cavallo in “Se scappi ti sposo”? Per non parlare della conversazione surreale fra un imbarazzatissimo Hugh Grant nei panni di Will e l’incantevole Julia, nel ruolo della star di Hollywood Anna Scott. Sì, mi riferisco al pluripremiato “Notting Hill” e alla scena in cui Grant si finge un giornalista di “Cavalli e Segugi” solo per avvicinarsi all’attrice dei suoi sogni e parlarle.
