Equine therapy for women with breast cancer

“Some horses will test you, some will teach you, and some will bring out the best in you”

When most people think of equine therapy, they usually think of hippotherapy but the therapeutic use of the horse is expanding to new and more creative possibilities. Being a woman, I was very impressed by the work of Beatrice Garzotto, an Italian equine therapist that combined her profession as psychologist with her love for horses to encourage women to explore their emotions as well as their authentic experience with cancer.

Interviewed by Tiziana Moriconi for the style magazine D la RepubblicaBeatrice talks about the power of connecting with horses, from the ground, to aid those who live the experience of illness to take up the reins of their life beyond the physical challenges. An emotional connection that invites you to live the “here and now” to disconnect, even just for a while, from the anxieties and fears induced by the disease.

I believe this kind of interaction based on mutual respect, trust, and collaboration proofs that there’s something profound that draws together horses and humans. Although riding horses can be exhilarating, get in touch with such incredibly sensitive and intuitive beings is undoubtedly a therapeutic journey all around, a journey of self-awareness, empowerment, and encouragement!

Looking forward to hear your experience horse lovers! Write me in the comment area below.

And for those of you in Italy next March 21st, Beatrice Garzotto will be at the Cattolica University of Milan for the workshop “La Relazione millenaria Uomo-Cavallo fra passato e futuro” on the relationship between humans and horses. It’s free but you have to register, and you can do it here.

Have a nice week.
