Kate Spade New York's equestrian flair: an inspiration to innovative women entrepreneurs

My dear Horse Lovers,
Today I would like to speak about a brand that has grabbed my attention a lot, for several reasons, and that I discovered thanks to my passion for horses. I am talking about Kate Spade New York, an American fashion house that changed fashion forever. 

Born in 1993 from the fantasy of Katherine Noel Brosnahan, aka Kate Spade, together with her husband Andy, its sparkling and refined design paved the way for affordable luxury goods. Kate Spade New York was one of the first to make luxury items affordable and accessible, stuck with a classic and elegant touch that was never too trendy to ensure it’d never go out of style. An avant-garde approach to sustainability, against the concept of fast fashion still married today by many brands.

Creating only bags first, then clothing, fashion accessories and even household items: within a few years Kate Spade's creativity has become of international domain. Inspired also by our beloved horses and the equestrian lifestyle, she turned her brand into a true icon of contemporary American fashion style that moved her craft forward, inspiring countless women.

oggi vi parlo di un brand che mi ha particolarmente colpito e toccato il cuore, per diversi motivi, e che ho notato grazie alla mia passione per i cavalli. Si tratta di Kate Spade New York, casa di moda americana che ha cambiato la moda per sempre. 

Nato nel 1993 dalla fantasia di Katherine Noel Brosnahan, in arte Kate Spade, insieme al marito Andy, il design frizzante e allo stesso tempo raffinato di questa maison ha fatto da apri pista al mondo del lusso accessibile. Kate Spade New York è stata una delle prime a portare nella moda i beni di lusso a prezzi accessibili, rimanendo fedele a un tocco classico ed elegante, mai troppo legato al trend del momento per garantire che non passasse mai di moda. Una filosofia all'avanguardia sul tema della sostenibilità e già al tempo in contro tendenza al concetto di fast fashion sposato ancora oggi da tanti brand.  

Prima solo borse, poi abbigliamento, accessori moda e persino articoli per la casa: nel giro di pochi anni l’estro e la creatività di Kate Spade sono diventati internazionali. Inspirata anche dai nostri amati cavalli e dal lifestyle equestre, ha trasformato il suo marchio in una vera e propria icona della moda contemporanea made in USA che ha fatto conoscere la sua arte, ispirando innumerevoli donne.

Unfortunately, the founder died on June 5 last year, taking her own life after a long and difficult coexistence with depression. An illness which is hard to believe existed in the heart of this designer, who had made vitality one of the strengths of her brand. The New York Fashion Week paid homage to her, and to the incredible contribution she brought to the fashion world, by including her brand on the catwalk of the New York Public Library, providing the brand’s new designer Nicola Glass with an opportunity of introducing herself to the public.

Purtroppo la fondatrice di questa casa di moda è morta il 5 giugno dello scorso anno, togliendosi la vita dopo una lunga e difficile convivenza con la depressione. Una malattia nettamente in contrasto con l’immagine briosa della designer, che aveva fatto di questa vivacità proprio il punto di forza del proprio brand. A lei, e all’incredibile contributo che il suo estro ha portato nel mondo della moda, la New York Fashion Week ha reso omaggio con un gesto simbolico davvero importante: l’inclusione del marchio sulla passerella della New York Public Library, fornendo così l’occasione alla nuova designer Nicola Glass di presentarsi al pubblico.

I was deeply impressed by the story of this woman, who was both strong and extremely fragile at the same time. And in her collections, I found the same contrast between delicacy and strength that characterized her very life, and that characterises also our four-legged friends: beautiful, strong but very fragile animals. A short life, but full of unique creativity that brought her, after her death, the recognition of thousands of people. Rest in peace.

Sono rimasta profondamente colpita dalla storia di questa donna forte e allo stesso tempo, purtroppo, estremamente fragile. E nelle sue collezioni ho ritrovato lo stesso contrasto fra delicatezza e forza che ha caratterizzato la sua intera vita e che rivedo anche nei nostri amici a quattro zampe: animali bellissimi, forti ma molto fragili. Una vita breve, ma piena di una creatività unica che le ha portato, dopo la sua morte, il riconoscimento e i ringraziamenti di migliaia di persone. Riposa in pace.
