I am sure you all have a favourite movie, perhaps linked to a particular moment in your life. One of my favourites is Notting Hill, one of the most beautiful love stories ever. I have already talked about it in this article, evoking an embarrassed Hugh Grant, smitten by the lovely Julia Roberts, pretending to be a journalist of “Horse & Hound”, in order to get closer to her and to talk to her. This particular tribute to horse riding reminded me of some curiosity about the unique relationship between the world of horses and cinema. And what's better than Christmas time to enjoy a great movie (equestrian of course :-) with friends and family?

sono sicura che ognuno di voi ha nel cuore un film speciale, magari collegato a un momento particolare della vostra vita. Uno dei miei preferiti è Notting Hill, una delle più belle storie d’amore di sempre. Ve ne ho già parlato in questo post, ricordando uno Hugh Grant imbarazzato e innamorato che si finge giornalista di “Cavalli e Segugi” solo per avvicinarsi a una splendida Julia Roberts e riuscire a parlarle. Questo simpatico omaggio all’equitazione mi ha fatto ricordare alcune curiosità relative al rapporto speciale fra il mondo dei cavalli e il cinema. E quale periodo migliore del Natale per godersi un bel film (chiaramente equestre :-) con amici e famiglia?
You may not know, for example, that in Django Unchained, the 2012 masterpiece by Quentin Tarantino, Jamie Foxx rode his own chestnut gelding named Cheetah. He received the horse as a birthday present in 2009 and never left him ever since. He loves him so much that he asked the movie director to have him in the film.
Forse non sapete ad esempio che in Django Unchained, capolavoro di Quentin Tarantino del 2012, Jamie Foxx ha cavalcato il suo personale castrone sauro di nome Cheetah. L’equino fu un regalo di compleanno del 2009 e da allora l’attore non se n’è mai più separato, tanto da chiedere al regista di inserirlo addirittura nel film.

Another great horse enthusiast is Viggo Mortensen: as soon as the filming of The Lord of the Rings was over, he decided to buy all the horses used in the film, because of the deep bond he felt for each one of them.
Un altro grande appassionato di cavalli è Viggo Mortensen: alla fine delle riprese de Il Signore degli Anelli decise di acquistare tutti i cavalli utilizzati nel film, per via del legame che si era creato con ciascuno di loro.

In Spielberg's 2011 movie War Horse, the horse Joey is the main character. During filming, 14 different horses played his role, in order to represent every stage of his life. The film received the highest recognition by the American Humane Association, which attests that no animals were harmed in the making of this film.
In War Horse, film di Spielberg del 2011, il cavallo Joey è invece il protagonista assoluto che, durante le riprese, è stato interpretato da ben 14 equini diversi, per rappresentare ogni fase della sua vita. Il film ha ricevuto il massimo riconoscimento da parte della American Humane Association, la quale attesta che nessun animale è stato maltrattato durante le riprese.

Speaking of horses, I can't help but mention one of the cult series of the last few years: I refer to Game of Thrones and the Dothraki warriors in particular. They believe that horses are sacred animals, the founding element of their entire existence. At the end of the first season, Drogo, the Dothraki leader, played by the mysterious Jason Momoa, falls off his red stallion and dies. He is thus burnt on a pyre along with his horse: a strong bond that would continue even after death.
E se si parla di cavalli, non si può non citare una delle serie cult degli ultimi anni: mi riferisco a Il Trono di Spade e al popolo dei Dothraki, per i quali il cavallo è un animale sacro, elemento fondante dell’intera loro esistenza. Alla fine della prima stagione Drogo, signore della guerra interpretato dal tenebroso Jason Momoa, cade dal suo stallone rosso e muore. Viene così bruciato su una pira insieme al suo cavallo: un legame talmente intenso da proseguire anche dopo la morte.
