Marina Abramović and the importance of Here and Now, in life as in riding!

Dear Horse Lovers,

Horse riding requires a very high level of concentration. Mind, body, every muscle must be alert, present, ready for action and feeling every movement of your horse. The feeling of being immersed in the here and now is something very intense and emotional, one of the reasons that make the relationship with these incredible animals so unique.

There is an artist that I love genuinely, who has taken this concept to a whole new level. I am speaking about Marina Abramović, a woman who can thoroughly impress the viewer's soul with her performance art, which has transformed silence into a form of art on itself.

cavalcare richiede un altissimo livello di concentrazione. Mente, corpo, tutto deve essere vigile, presente, pronto all’azione e all’ascolto del tuo cavallo. La sensazione di essere immersa nel qui ed ora è qualcosa di molto intenso ed emozionale, una delle ragioni che rende speciale il rapporto con questi animali meravigliosi.

C’è un’artista che amo profondamente, che ha dato a questo livello di concentrazione una profondità davvero unica. Mi riferisco a Marina Abramović: una donna in grado di colpire a fondo l’animo dello spettatore con la sua performance art, che ha trasformato il silenzio in un’opera d’arte.

Marina is the creator of the “Abramović Method” and claims that true art should have the ability to naturally raise the right questions. The audience should be able to reflect in it and share the mood with the artist, in a path of mutual enrichment.

Creatrice del “Metodo Abramović”, Marina sostiene che l’arte debba sollevare degli interrogativi nelle persone. Lo spettatore deve potersi specchiare in essa e condividere i suoi stati d’animo con l’artista, in un percorso di arricchimento reciproco.

The only thing that matters is the present moment, crucial point of Mindfulness, in which the artist immerses himself or herself trying to establish a deeper contact with the spectator. That’s when the experience turns into something memorable for both.

“Time is an illusion” Marina Abramović says. “Time only exists when we think about the past and the future. Time doesn't exist in the present, here and now.” 

Is it not, after all, what happens to us when we ride? We become one with our horse and establish an intense dialogue with him.

L’unica cosa che conta è il momento presente, punto cruciale della Mindfulness,  in cui l’artista si immerge cercando un incontro con lo spettatore. È solo allora che l’esperienza si trasforma in qualcosa di memorabile per entrambi.

“Quando lo spettatore sarà, con la propria mente e con il proprio corpo, nello stesso luogo e nello stesso tempo del performer, allora potrà avvenire una sorta di scambio di energie. E il tempo non esisterà più” racconta Marina Abramović.

Non è, in fondo, esattamente ciò che ci accade quando cavalchiamo? Diventiamo un tutt’uno con il nostro cavallo e instauriamo con lui un dialogo profondo.

Abramović herself investigates this relationship between man and horse, by paying tribute to his father, a soldier who has fought in World War II, with her performance “The Hero” as featured in the cover picture. The man is represented by the artist herself, riding a white stallion and holding a white flag, as a sign of surrender. Personally, I find this scene highly engaging and touching, but above all real and authentic, just like Marina.

La stessa Abramović approfondisce questo rapporto tra uomo e cavallo rendendo omaggio al padre, un soldato della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, con la sua performance “The Hero”, che trovate nella foto di copertina. L’uomo viene rappresentato dall’artista stessa, in sella a uno stallone bianco come la bandiera che impugna, in segno di resa. Personalmente, trovo questa scena altamente coinvolgente e toccante, ma soprattutto reale e autentica, proprio come Marina.
