Dear Horse Lovers,

If you love the idea of time travelling to past ages, today I will take you on a special journey. Did you know that, in the past, aristocratic women mounted a horse aside rather than astride? Over the centuries this style has taken the name of side saddle and, from its first appearance at the court of the Gonzaga family of Mantua in the 14th century, it spread all across Europe.

se amate tornare indietro nel tempo e rivivere epoche storiche passate, oggi vi faccio sognare a occhi aperti. Sapevate che una volta le donne aristocratiche montavano a cavallo con entrambe le gambe dallo stesso lato? Nel corso dei secoli questo stile ha preso il nome di monta all’amazzone e, dalla sua comparsa alla corte dei Gonzaga di Mantova nel ‘300, si è poi radicato in tutta Europa.

The charm of this tradition has remained intact till the modern day, so much that some enthusiasts founded A.I.M.A. in 2011, the Associazione Italiana Monta all'Amazzone (Side Saddle Italian Association). I have already wrote about them in this article, but they surely deserve a new mention for the recent twinning between A.I.M.A. and AAMA (Asociación Andaluza de Monta a la Amazona). The event took place in the beautiful Andalusian village of El Rocio, where the members of the two associations spent a whole day together, wearing the elegant and sophisticated equestrian clothes that characterise them: a fashion detail that blends sport and glamour, making this historical discipline incredibly feminine.

Il fascino della tradizione è rimasto intatto fino ad oggi, tanto da spingere alcune appassionate a fondare nel 2011 l’A.I.M.A., l’Associazione Italiana Monta all’Amazzone. Vi ho già parlato di loro in passato in questo articolo, ma le ragazze meritano una nuova menzione per aver raggiunto, lo scorso settembre, il gemellaggio fra A.I.M.A. e l’AAMA Asociación Andaluza de Monta a la Amazona. L’evento ha avuto luogo nello splendido paese andaluso di El Rocio, dove le socie delle due associazioni hanno passato un’intera giornata insieme, indossando gli abiti equestri eleganti e sofisticati che le caratterizzano: un dettaglio fashion che fonde sport e glamour, rendendo questa disciplina storica incredibilmente femminile.

The clothes worn by the Spanish girls during the twinning ceremony reflected the traditional Andalusian style. The long skirts are made of twill, alpaca or bi-elastic fibres, fabrics that are heavier than others and therefore do not interfere with the movements of the amazons. Short-cut jackets are closed just by the first button, and are usually combined with vests that are worn completely buttoned. The wide-brimmed hat is also an essential piece, always worn slightly tilted to the left.

Gli abiti indossati dalle ragazze spagnole durante la cerimonia di gemellaggio rispecchiano il tradizionale stile andaluso. Le lunghe gonne sono realizzate in armatura saia, alpaca o fibre bielastiche, tessuti che risultano più pesanti rispetto ad altri e che quindi non intralciano i movimenti delle amazzoni durante la cavalcata. Le giacche dal taglio corto vengono chiuse solamente dal primo bottone, e sono solitamente abbinate a gilet che si indossano invece completamente abbottonati. Indispensabile è inoltre il cappello a tesa larga, che viene sempre inclinato verso sinistra.

A.I.M.A.’s style, instead, is inspired by the English tradition. English amazons wear top hats and their hair is gathered in a bun. The jackets should not be too short or wide, while the half-wheel skirts cover the rider's legs and prevent them from slipping. Plus, let’s not forget about gloves, usually made of brown leather.

Lo stile portato avanti dall’A.I.M.A. si ispira invece alla tradizione inglese.  Le amazzoni d’oltremanica portano cappelli a cilindro e i capelli raccolti in un chignon. Le giacche non devono essere troppo corte o larghe, mentre le gonne a mezza ruota coprono le gambe della cavallerizza impedendo eventuali scivoloni. Non possono inoltre mancare i guanti, solitamente realizzati in pelle marrone. 

Whatever the style, these amazons always give life to an exciting show of rare beauty and elegance.
